Architecture and engineering company HDR wanted to bring their web presence into the modern age. Our goal was to bring HDR’s personality to the forefront with their new Drupal 8 website. Through extensive strategy and design workshops, facilitated on-site in Omaha and virtually with distributed team members, we crafted an information architecture and aesthetic that supported internal initiatives while enhancing the general public’s experience.

Training is the most exciting part of a project. It’s the point when our team hands over our hard work and shows our clients how the final product will actually work for them. It can be really hard to get everyone in a training session at one time. Even then, knowledge imparted from classroom-style trainings can easily be forgotten if not written down. After our trainings, we deliver a written handbook for editors to reference as they work with their new site. Here are a few of words of wisdom that make a handbook useful and usable for your content managers!

Trying to sign in to your TurboTax account to file your taxes for the year, you fill in your username and password and press submit. Easy enough. The next screen loads telling you “We sent an SMS to your phone, please enter the code now.” Your eyes roll. You go looking for your phone which is lost in the abyss that is the space between couch cushions.

With almost every aggressively-timed project launch, the race to the finish line can easily become a game of task resolution whack-a-mole. With anxieties running high, the pre-launch to-do list can easily balloon to an unmanageable size. New requests come streaming in seemingly as fast as (or even faster than) previous requests get checked off. To keep the launch plan on track, every project should maintain a list of launch blockers. But what exactly makes something a launch blocker?

At the Pacific Northwest Drupal Summit, I took part in an off-the-cuff conversation about advice for starting project managers. Putting aside the jargon, tools and methodologies, I grasped for concise, memorable recommendations. I found myself describing ideas that I later realized were already encapsulated in general cliches. These well known sayings represent important management techniques that help keep a project on course.
